Taft/Sherman & Howard Adds Public Finance Attorney to Albuquerque Office
Taft, formerly Sherman & Howard, welcomed public finance attorney Camila Gutiérrez Writtenberry to its Albuquerque office.
Writtenberry advises public and private clients on financing tools that drive infrastructure, economic development, and long-term community investment across New Mexico. She represents the New Mexico Finance Authority in its Opportunity Enterprise Programs, which provide low-cost financing for commercial development, workforce and affordable housing development, as well as a number of public improvement districts and tax increment districts. Additionally, she serves as counsel to the Mesa del Sol, South Campus, and Winrock Tax Increment Development Districts.
“What drew me back to Sherman & Howard, now Taft, was the inclusive culture and the vast learning and growth opportunities,” said Writtenberry. “I’ll be able to continue developing my practice with strong mentorship, collaborate with talented colleagues, and be part of a firm committed to the community.”
In addition to her legal work, Writtenberry is the founder and owner of a national translation and interpretation firm that provides language access and promotes cultural competency in various industries across the country. She volunteers with the American Cancer Society’s Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and was honored as New Mexico’s first Caretaker Honoree for the 2025 campaign. Writtenberry also serves on the board of Ethos Literacy, a nonprofit that offers free tutoring to those who face barriers due to low literacy, limited English proficiency, or interrupted schooling.
Writtenberry is returning to the firm after participating in Sherman & Howard’s 2022 and 2023 Summer Associate Program and serving as a law clerk.
“Camila is an extremely valuable addition to our team,” said Jill Sweeney, Taft’s New Mexico office lead and public finance partner. “Her strong background and commitment to client service will be a tremendous asset as we continue to expand in the New Mexico market and deliver innovative solutions to our clients.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Camila back to the firm,” said Taft Public Finance Practice Group chair Cory Kalanick. “Her previous work here, coupled with her deep engagement in the community, makes her valuable to the firm and its communities. I can only imagine what she will be capable of as she grows her public finance practice.”
Writtenberry earned her J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of New Mexico.
Since announcing the merger with Taft in Sept. 2024, public finance attorneys David Buchholtz and Dan Opperman also joined the office. Buchholtz focuses his practice on public finance, government finance, economic development, financial institutions, government relations, securities, and corporate matters. Opperman focuses his practice on bond financing, economic development, securities, and new markets tax credits.
Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Taft combined with Sherman & Howard, Denver’s oldest and third-largest firm. The merger expanded Taft’s footprint into the Mountain West, including Albuquerque, and added approximately 125 lawyers. In addition to Buchholtz, Writtenberry, and Opperman, Taft has welcomed 20 new attorneys in the Mountain West region since announcing the merger, furthering its strategic growth.
