Summary

Spencer is an attorney in Taft’s litigation and appellate practice groups, representing businesses and individuals at all stages of litigation. He handles a broad range of commercial disputes, including consumer class actions, securities litigation and arbitration, and contract disputes.

Spencer’s representative experience includes:

  • Securing dismissal of a putative nationwide class action alleging manufacturing defects in a popular consumer product;
  • Defeating class certification in a separate nationwide class action alleging manufacturing defects in a popular consumer product;
  • Obtaining dismissal of a putative nationwide securities class action arising from a suspected Ponzi scheme;
  • Cross-examining the named plaintiff in an arbitration arising from a securities-fraud dispute, securing a complete defense verdict;
  • Delivering opening and closing arguments in a bench trial arising from a million-dollar contract dispute between a steel manufacturer and an automotive-parts manufacturer, securing a complete plaintiff verdict;
  • Securing a favorable settlement on behalf of a prominent Cincinnati restaurant chain in a contract dispute against a kitchen-equipment manufacturer; and
  • Drafting winning appellate briefs, obtaining reversal of a trial court’s denial of federal officer immunity to law enforcement officers

Before joining Taft, Spencer served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. John B. Nalbandian, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and practiced as an associate in the litigation group at Shearman & Sterling LLP in Washington, D.C. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as Executive Editor of the Journal of Law and Politics, and his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Davidson College.
