Summary

Rich is a partner in Taft’s Cleveland office who focuses his practice on solving complex state and local tax problems for businesses and individuals. He guides clients through multistate sales and use tax, commercial activity tax, and personal income tax compliance and controversies, including high-stakes disputes before the Ohio Supreme Court, the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals, and the Internal Revenue Service.

He also advises clients on tax credit and economic development incentives, helping structure projects to maximize available credits and exemptions while aligning with business objectives. Drawing on his tax background, he regularly advises on the business and tax implications of commercial and real estate transactions so clients can execute deals efficiently and with a clear understanding of their after-tax results. Rich takes pride in bringing a practical, problem-solving approach to help clients address and avoid issues encountered in their business.

In addition, Rich represents nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations on formation, qualification, governance, and ongoing compliance matters. He is a trusted advisor for all types of organizations needing to navigate the complexities and nuances of the Internal Revenue Code and state tax laws.

Beyond his client work, Rich is active in the community and in the profession. He volunteers with several charitable organizations in Northeast Ohio, including service on the boards of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio and the Greater Akron Chamber.

Rich’s background includes both legal and technical tax training. He earned his J.D., summa cum laude, and a Master of Taxation from The University of Akron, and his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Kent State University. This combination of advanced tax education and broad legal experience allows him to translate complex tax rules into clear, actionable guidance for clients.
