Summary
Renowned for his expertise in international dispute resolution and appellate work, Bo, a former U.S. Supreme Court law clerk, combines extensive academic knowledge with practical legal experience to address complex global legal issues. For a decade, he served as Dean of the University of Georgia School of Law, and he continues to hold a chair on its faculty.
Co-author of one of the nation’s leading books on international civil litigation, Bo has filed nearly 70 briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court and appellate courts throughout the country. Appointed by the Court as amicus curiae to argue the case of Irizzary v. United States, in successful defense of the judgment below, joining the rare ranks of Supreme Court litigators who successfully prevailed in a case the U.S. government declined to defend.
Alongside his appellate work, Rutledge maintains an extensive dispute resolution practice in international litigation, international arbitration, and domestic arbitration, including mass arbitration. He has served as arbitrator in multiple institutional proceedings and as an expert in both international and domestic disputes.
As law school dean, Bo led the school through a period of significant growth and innovation. Under his leadership, the institution set records for rankings and fundraising, expanded student financial aid access, and was consistently recognized as one of the nation’s top values in legal education. Before his appointment as dean, Bo was the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, collaborating closely with the law school’s faculty, particularly its untenured professors, to advance and support scholarly and research initiatives. Before joining UGA, Bo was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Vienna Law School (Austria) and a faculty member at the Catholic University Law School.
Prior to his academic roles, Bo worked in private practice, where he specialized in international dispute resolution and U.S. Supreme Court matters. He also served as a judicial clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice Clarence Thomas and at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for Chief Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III.
He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, American Law Institute, Atlanta International Arbitration Society, and Society for the Rule of Law.
An accomplished scholar, Bo is the author of Arbitration and the Constitution and co-author, with Gary Born, of “International Civil Litigation in United States Courts”. His research has been published by prestigious academic presses, including Yale University Press, Oxford University Press, and Cambridge University Press. His articles have appeared in leading journals such as the University of Chicago Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, and Journal of International Arbitration.
