Summary
Kelsea is an associate in Taft’s Real Estate practice group in Chicago. She focuses her practice on zoning and land use issues, advising real estate developers, property owners, corporations, and local governments on land use approvals, licensing, permitting, statutory compliance, and other local government matters.
Kelsea guides clients pursuing commercial, mixed-use, industrial, logistics, and infrastructure developments through land use approval processes in Chicago and in suburban and rural municipalities throughout Illinois. This work includes zoning map and text amendments, special use permits, variations, planned developments, subdivisions, and economic incentives.
Prior to joining Taft, Kelsea was an associate with a boutique land use and local government law firm in Chicago, where, in addition to her private development practice, she served as outside counsel to local governments throughout Chicagoland on a wide range of topics including zoning, licensing, governance, contracts, and statutory compliance, such as the Illinois Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act. Her experience as a municipal attorney gives her a practical understanding of local government procedures and entitlement processes, which she now draws on to help private clients navigate local approvals efficiently.
Before her legal career, Kelsea worked as a business development and marketing strategist for global architecture and construction firms, pursuing opportunities with institutional, private development, corporate, government, and public-private partnership clients. She also worked for several years on state and federal election campaigns.
Kelsea earned her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law and her bachelor’s degree in public relations from Ball State University. During law school, Kelsea received an Environmental and Energy Law and Policy certification and participated in the Land Use and Real Estate Law Society.
