
Summary
Courtney is a partner in Taft’s Intellectual Property group. He has over 25 years of experience in U.S. and foreign patent procurement, international patent practice, patent and trademark portfolio management, and patent-related legal opinions, as well as product and technology development and commercialization.
Courtney focuses his law practice on obtaining high-value patents, developing patent strategies, managing large patent portfolios, providing freedom-to-operate opinions, and negotiating and drafting technology commercialization agreements. He has significant legal and technical knowledge in the areas of medical devices, drug delivery systems, biotechnology and molecular biology, advanced welding and joining technologies, and consumer products. Miller also assists clients with obtaining FDA clearance for medical devices. Prior to practicing law, Courtney spent ten years as a research scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute.
Courtney earned his J.D. and LL.M. in business from Capital University Law School and his bachelor’s degree in biology from the College of Wooster. While in law school, Courtney was a staff member and executive notes editor for the Capital University Law Review. He is a frequent author, panelist, and speaker on various legal and business topics and has been an executive mentor for the Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Commercialization course at the Fisher College of Business at the Ohio State University.
