Labor & Employment Breakfast Briefing - Indianapolis

8:00 – 8:30 a.m.
How to Conduct an Effective Workplace Investigation
Speaker: Mick Terrell

Employers are required to conduct investigations in a number of instances in the workplace. Knowing how to conduct an effective investigation can significantly reduce an employer’s potential exposure to legal claims.  During this presentation, we will address the key elements of an effective workplace investigation, including tips for interviewing witnesses, documentation, and making findings and conclusions.

8:30 – 9:00 a.m.
Religion in the Workplace
Speaker: Tom Devoe

Religion in the workplace is one of the most contentious and difficult areas for employers to navigate.  It is a complex web of seemingly contradictory rights and obligations.  While religion-based discrimination generally must be prohibited, accommodation of religious beliefs may be required.  The workplace need not be devoid of religious content, but employers should understand the boundaries for permitting the expression of religious beliefs.  Today, in the United States, religious diversity is on the rise, and so are religion-based complaints in the workplace.  This presentation explores the boundaries of the employer’s legal rights and obligations on the subject of religion, so that the employer may provide a workplace that is both compliant with the law and responsive to employees’ religious beliefs.

9:00 – 9:30 a.m.
