Taft is seeking a Legal Assistant to serve our Employment and Labor Relations and Immigration Groups in Taft’s Detroit (Southfield) office.
We are seeking a Legal Assistant with 3+ years’ experience to support our Employment and Labor Relations and Immigration groups in the Detroit (Southfield) office. All Taft employees operate under a “Client First” philosophy—in all things, we seek to provide exceptional services to our clients.
Essential Duties:
- Provides skilled, proactive support to assigned employment and labor relations and litigation attorneys, and others, on occasion.
- Prepares and reviews documents, letters and memoranda according to Firm standards using word processing and document management systems and software.
- Accurately proofreads and edits documents.
- Independently performs administrative duties such as managing and maintaining attorney schedules and calendars; proofing, editing and releasing attorney time entries; registering, calendaring and reporting CLEs; assisting with management of client contacts, emails, and print documents; processing mail; requesting and following up on reimbursements and other related tasks.
- E-files in state and federal courts.
- Supports the billing process as requested.
- Creates, maintains, and retires files in accordance with Taft’s Information Governance Policy.
- Reviews attorney emails and saves to correct client file as requested.
- Exhibits outstanding client service orientation in greeting guests, scheduling meetings, and contacting, supporting and interacting with clients.
- Displays strong attention to detail.
- Responds to requests with a sense of urgency and effectively prioritizes work.
- Demonstrates flexibility and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Maintains confidentiality of matters and information.
- Clearly communicates in a concise, professional manner.
- Provides confidential administrative support to attorneys and paralegals in the Immigration Practice Group including but not limited to composing or preparing documents and in/out correspondence.
- Assists attorneys and paralegals with immigration petitions and applications for filing.
- Works with clients to gather documents and information necessary for applications.
- Responds to inquiries from clients regarding case status and submits inquiries on case status to USCIS.
- Processes correspondence from USCIS, DOS, and DOS including notifying clients, assisting clients to prepare responses to notices or evidence requests as appropriate, and following up with relevant parties
- Performs case management of immigration matters including tracking of expirations.
- Conducts factual legal research and analysis relevant to the Immigration Practice using all available resources, including print and electronic sources.
- At the direction of the assigning attorney, corresponds with government agencies, vendors, and clients.
- Arranges for procurement of outside services (e.g., translation and evaluation services), and works with vendors to provide quotes to supervising attorney.
Requirements:
- 3+ years related experience strongly preferred
- Proficient command of the English language and standard grammar rules
- Strong working knowledge of and experience in using Microsoft Office programs; desire to maintain and upgrade excellent technical skills and to learn new software
