HR Compliance Manager

Taft is seeking a HR Compliance Manager to support our Human Resources Department in Taft’s Columbus or Minneapolis office.
We are seeking a HR Compliance Manager to support our Human Resources Department. This position will be located in our Columbus or Minneapolis office but will support all Taft offices nationwide. The HR Compliance Manager supports the development, implementation, and ongoing administration of the Firm’s employment-compliance program. This position monitors evolving federal, state, and local employment requirements; maintains the Firm’s compliance calendar and policy infrastructure; coordinates compliance reviews and audits; and works across Human Resources, Legal, Benefits, Payroll, Talent Acquisition, and Firm leadership to support timely and consistent compliance practices.
The Manager serves as a central point of coordination for HR compliance matters, translating legal and regulatory requirements into practical processes, documentation, and controls. The position identifies potential gaps, recommends appropriate corrective action, and monitors remediation through completion. Matters involving significant legal interpretation or risk are escalated to the CHRO or appropriate legal counsel. Duties and Responsibilities:
Compliance program management
- Develop and maintain an inventory of employment-related compliance obligations applicable to the Firm’s offices and employee populations.
- Maintain a centralized compliance calendar identifying deadlines, responsible stakeholders, required actions, and completion documentation.
- Establish consistent processes for documenting compliance decisions, reviews, approvals, and remediation.
- Prepare periodic compliance dashboards and reports for HR and Firm leadership.
- Periodically audit HR compliance involving areas such as I-9, wage and hour, policy acknowledgement and others.
- Identify emerging risks, process gaps, and opportunities to strengthen internal controls.
Regulatory monitoring and implementation
- Monitor relevant federal, state, and local employment-law and regulatory developments.
- Research requirements and prepare concise summaries, jurisdictional comparisons, implementation checklists, and recommendations.
- Escalate issues requiring legal analysis to the CHRO.
- Maintain a current jurisdictional matrix reflecting where the Firm employs personnel and the requirements applicable in those locations.
Policies, notices, and documentation
- Work with CHRO to conduct periodic review and revision of HR policies, handbook provisions, and state or local supplements.
- Maintain required workplace postings, employee notices, acknowledgments, forms, and related documentation.
- Maintain version control, approval records, and implementation documentation for compliance materials.
Cross-functional coordination
- Share information and updates with benefits, payroll, talent acquisition, employee relations and other functions on matters involving shared compliance obligations.
- Participate in implementation of HR systems and processes to ensure appropriate compliance controls and recordkeeping.
- Perform other compliance-related duties and projects as assigned.
Education, Knowledge & Skills:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree, paralegal certificate, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to research and synthesize complex legal or regulatory requirements.
- Strong project-management, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Excellent judgment and ability to recognize when an issue should be escalated.
- Ability to manage multiple jurisdictions, deadlines, and stakeholders.
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
Preferred
- Experience as a paralegal in employment law, general counsel, corporate compliance, benefits, or a law-firm environment.
- Experience conducting compliance audits or managing remediation plans.
- Familiarity with employment-law requirements affecting wage and hour, leave, accommodations, background checks, workplace postings, training, and recordkeeping.
- Experience with compliance-management, policy-management, HRIS, or learning-management systems.
- Compliance or HR certification, such as CCEP, SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR, or an advanced paralegal credential.
