U.S. Imposes Tariff on Solar Equipment Imports

On Jan. 22, the U.S. Trade Representative announced that President Trump has authorized a safeguard tariff on the import of solar cells and modules coming from Asia and our neighbors in North America. According to the USTR, the new tariff was implemented in large part because of the significant increase in production and generation of solar cells and modules coming from China. China, tapping into its state incentives, subsidies, and employing its own tariff, has controlled the worldwide supply chain of solar cells and modules, according to the USTR. Consequently, domestic production and manufacturing of the same solar cells and modules were impacted negatively.

Jan. 16, 2018), the court took the unusual step of allocating Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act liability to a party who played no part in contaminating the site at issue.

| | |  | EPA Preliminarily Concludes That Glyphosate is Not Likely to be Carcinogenic to Humans

In December, the EPA released for public comment draft human health and ecological risk assessments for the pesticide glyphosate and concluded that the pesticide is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans. The EPA also found no other meaningful risks to human health when the pesticide is used according to its EPA-approved product label.

| | |  | Former Lawrence Economic Development Director Starnes Joins Taft
Taft welcomes Cameron Starnes to its Indianapolis office as of counsel in the firm’s Environmental and Brownfield and Site Development practices.
Starnes previously served as the director of economic development for the city of Lawrence, where he guided and directed strategic investment of public resources to facilitate new development and employment opportunities. Prior to that he focused on redevelopment efforts for the city of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development in the Redevelopment and Community Economic Development Divisions, including directing Indianapolis’ Brownfield Redevelopment Program.
