March 11, 2009
Despite the current uncertainties in the real estate market, many property owners in Ohio have experienced significant increases in real estate values for tax purposes as the result of revaluations by county auditors based on values as of January 1, 2008. By law, property owners in Ohio have until March 31 of each year to file complaints with their county auditors concerning such revaluations or 30 days to file a counter-complaint after being notified that a local school board has initiated a complaint with respect to a particular parcel. If you feel that a value should be challenged based on the January 1, 2008 valuation or you are notified that your school board has challenged the value of property that you own, you should contact your Taft attorney or one of the local attorneys named in this alert, so that you can preserve your right to challenge an excessive valuation.
Please remember that a real estate tax complaint in Ohio must be filed with the county auditor by March 31.
