The following news release is now linked to our web site. This release was issued by Linda Pence's campaign to the media for her announcement that she is running for Indiana Attorney General.
Indianapolis, IN, June 5, 2008 – Attorney Linda Pence formally announced today that she is running for the office of Indiana Attorney General.
“I am running for Attorney General because Hoosiers need an independent voice to stand up for them,” said Pence, a practicing attorney for 34 years. “Whether it’s fighting mortgage and consumer fraud, or battling the scourge of methamphetamine in our communities, Hoosiers deserve an Attorney General who is tireless and relentless. I am ready for the challenge.”
At a series of news conferences in communities across the state, Pence discussed how her qualifications and experience best positions her to stand up for Hoosiers. Among the issues she would attack immediately as Attorney General include fighting mortgage and consumer fraud, combating the meth and drug epidemic, and playing a pivotal role in protecting children from predators lurking online and in our communities.
A 1971 graduate of Indiana University, Linda Pence worked her way through IU’s law school, taking night classes while holding down two jobs. She began her legal career with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), where she took on big oil companies when gasoline price gouging was a common practice. During her nearly ten years at the DOJ, Pence also investigated corporations for bribery, embezzlement and tax fraud.
Upon returning to Indianapolis, Pence took on an unusual challenge for a woman at the time, opening her own law firm. It quickly grew into a thriving criminal and civil practice, and in 1995, Linda Pence became the first female partner to have her name on the door at one of the city’s ten largest law firms.
Pence is perhaps best known for winning a record settlement of more than $14 million for Hoosiers against a corporation whose illegal practices killed tons of fish in the White River. The proceeds from the settlement have been used to help restore both the wildlife and river, while also stopping the company from polluting the river. Drawing on her extensive experience as a litigator, Pence also successfully stood up for Central Indiana mom-and-pop gas station owners against Shell Oil, a multinational corporation, in a complex case that involved claims of unlawful price discrimination, violation of the Indiana Deceptive Franchise Practices Act, breach of contract and fraud.
“If you want a tough attorney general who won’t back down from a fight and who’s not afraid to take on big oil companies, cyber criminals, meth peddlers and those who prey upon children and the elderly,” Pence continued, “then I am your lawyer.”
Since forming her exploratory committee in January 2008, Pence already has raised $248,000. She does not face opposition at the Indiana Democratic Party’s State convention, which is scheduled for June 21, 2008 in Indianapolis.
