« Back Taft Attorney Lembke Elected President of Cincinnati Athletic Club

May 14, 2008

Cincinnati, OH, May 14, 2008 – Raymond W. Lembke, senior attorney at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, was recently elected president of the Cincinnati Athletic Club (CAC). Founded in 1853, the CAC is the oldest continuously operating private athletic club in the United States.

“The CAC cultivates networking opportunities and professional friendships, adding to regional culture as it relates to athletics,” said Lembke. “I look forward to serving as president. My focus will be to continue to solidify our financial position, grow the membership and promote greater involvement in governance – increasing the value of club membership.”

There are currently 551 CAC members, including more than 25 women, in the formerly men-only organization. Members include business, politics, law and education professionals. The Cincinnati Athletic Club has a rich history of athletic competition and community involvement. Special events currently include luncheons, holiday parties, dinners and special guest speakers. Additionally, the CAC worldwide network of reciprocal clubs provides approximately 85 clubs that offer lodging and 156 clubs with athletics amenities.

A longtime organization, past Cincinnati Athletic Club members have included several Cincinnati personalities, most notably U.S. presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James A Garfield, Benjamin Harrison and William Howard Taft. The downtown facility, constructed in 1903, has been designated a national historic landmark. Within the CAC building, the Cincinnati Museum of Athletics displays a number of major sports collectibles – artifacts of amateur athletic history of Cincinnati.

“I’ve been a member of the CAC for over 21 years, and have made many important relationships,” commented Lembke. A significant number of club members are lawyers, he noted, including several Taft attorneys. Lembke’s presidency follows that of John McCoy, Taft Partner.

Lembke joined Taft in 1984 after serving as a law clerk to United States District Judge Myron H. Thompson. He received his B.A. from Northwestern University in 1980 and his law degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1983. Lembke has served as chair of the Cincinnati Bar Association Court of Appeals Committee and that Association's committee on bar admissions. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Potter Stewart American Inn of Court.
