« Back Taft Attorneys Hosting Commissioner of Patents for Top Level Panel Discussion Concerning Recent and Ongoing Upheavals in United States Patent Law

July 10, 2007

Cincinnati, OH – Recent Supreme Court decisions, proposed legislative changes and proposed rule changes have and may enormously impact the patent landscape.  The majority of these changes substantially weaken patent holders’ ability to enforce patents and make it substantially more difficult for inventors to obtain patents.  David A. Mancino and Kevin W. Kirsch, patent attorneys who practice in the Intellectual Property and Technology Commercialization Practice Area of Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, are hosting a panel discussion concerning these changes on behalf of the Cincinnati Intellectual Property Law Association on July 16 at the Queen City Club.

The event will take place from 11:00 to 1:00 pm and will include lunch for the cost of $35 a person.  The seminar is approved for CLE credit.

The panel discussion will commence with an introduction regarding the status of pending patent reform legislation by Representative Steve Chabot, who is on the Judiciary Committee, the Intellectual Property Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee, and is the Ranking member of the Small Business Committee.

The introduction will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mancino, with the following participants: John Doll, The Commissioner of Patents, Steve Miller, Vice President and General Counsel Patent, Procter & Gamble; Brian P. Barrett, Associate General Patent Counsel, Eli Lilly and Co.; Matthew Vella, Vice President, Acacia Research Corporation; Martha Sarra, Senior Counsel and Assistant Secretary, The Kroger Co.; Robert Gray, CEO, Maverick Corporation; and Kevin Kirsch, Partner and Patent Attorney with Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP.

The panel is comprised of representatives from four states covering many different sides of the current debate on patent reform.   The diverse interests of the members promises a lively and spirited debate on issues with far reaching ramifications to inventors and businesses throughout the United States.

The program topics include, “Recent, Significant Changes in Patent Law by the New U.S. Supreme Court; “ “Proposed Sweeping and Material Changes in Patent Law Pending in Front of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate;” and “Proposed Major Changes in Patent Rules Pending in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.”
