culture & benefits / professional development
As a new associate with Taft, you will be pleased to know that we hire associates with the intention of making them partners in the firm someday. We know that you can’t accomplish that without some guidance, so we have created programs to assist in your development.

The firm employs a Director of Legal Recruiting and a Director of Legal Personnel whose responsibility it is to ensure that summer associates and attorneys have the tools needed to be successful.

Each new lawyer will participate in an extensive orientation program upon arrival at the firm. These sessions introduce new attorneys to the many support functions the firm has to offer. Throughout the year, there are ongoing training sessions offered. New lawyers are assigned at least one mentor. The role of the mentor is to offer assistance as you become integrated into the firm and your practice.

Taft is committed to your success and will provide you with the support and training that you need. We emphasize small working groups, where new lawyers work closely with experienced lawyers and clients. We encourage your growth by providing you challenging work, educational programs, mentoring relationships, and an open and honest dialogue about your progression. The firm’s lawyers are evaluated, formally, on an annual basis but receive informal feedback, on a regular basis, while working closely with more experienced lawyers.

Though our atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, we believe in working hard and meeting the needs of our clients. Because we believe that it takes more than billable hours to be successful, we encourage our lawyers to be involved in the firm and community.

At Taft we are focused on ensuring that all our attorneys are equipped with the tools to become the best lawyers they can be—which in turn helps ensure that we continue to be among the strongest, most progressive, most effective law firms in the region.
